Words In The Water by Thrice

Later tonight I’ll be seeing this band on what may be their last tour. I’ve spent my life falling in love with hundreds of bands and albums and songs - but Thrice is different than any of them in the sense that no band has ever made me feel through music the way Thrice can.

Thrice isn’t my all time favorite band. They didn’t make my favorite record of all time. They have songs I don’t love. Whenever they release an album, I adore it - but somehow it always falls to that “2nd or 3rd place” status when I make my year end lists (except for last year’s Major/Minor, which was the last and best album they would make)

But what Thrice is to me is a band I grew with. As their sound evolved, my music taste always happened to be evolving alongside what they were doing. Current bands don’t matter to me - the only currently active bands I truly hold dear are ones that have existed since before the 2000s, or have reunited in recent years. Thrice was different. They created this sound that I’ve never found anywhere else. Something that truly sparks emotion in me more than any other band. I can’t figure out what it is, but they’ve brought me to tears with certain songs - and they’ve remained consistent. While the few other newer bands I got into over the years went downhill, they’ve become the one band I can always count on to never let me down, and now they’re bowing out leaving behind a catalog of brilliant, inspiring music.

I hope years from now people look back on Thrice as a definitive band of this decade that never really got their due. I hope I hear their influence in younger bands down the line, and that they truly get some sort of place in history. Hell, I hope someday I just overhear some teenager talk about how Vheissu or Major/Minor changed their life when they were a kid because their older brother had it or something. Maybe it’s already happening. I sure hope so.

So, I’m trying to rebuild the mix-cd I made for my ex last summer.

ethanfromestoboggan:

it was hands down the best playlist I’ve ever made in my life. And I miss it. But I accidently forgot to save it and she has the only copy. And since she wont’ speak to me I can’t get the tracklist. So I’m trying to redo it from memory, and it’s not working.

Well obviously it wasn’t THAT good then! Haha I kid, but here’s a funny story for you…

I save the tracklists for every mix I ever make someone. I used to think it was weird and kinda lame that I was so nostalgic and held onto that kind of stuff - till randomly a girl I dated in like 2004 messaged me on facebook last year out of the blue asking me as a longshot if I still had the tracklist for a mix I’d made her. She said her copy was so worn out from playing it over the years and she’d lost the case with the names of the songs. Although there was a lot of embarrassing stuff on there, it was an amazing feeling knowing that I impacted someone’s life that way and a mix I made had such a lasting effect. I resent her a zip file with the whole mix :)

So always keep that shit dude. You never know if you’ll need it.

haha so true…most conversations I’ve had with “wrestling fans” over the years are some variation of this.

Radiohead - Street Spirit

I can’t believe we have fans that can deal emotionally with that song. That’s why I’m convinced that they don’t know what it’s about. It’s why we play it towards the end of our sets. It drains me, and it shakes me, and hurts like hell every time I play it, looking out at thousands of people cheering and smiling, oblivious to the tragedy of its meaning, like when you’re going to have your dog put down and it’s wagging its tail on the way there. That’s what they all look like, and it breaks my heart. I wish that song hadn’t picked us as its catalysts, and so I don’t claim it. It asks too much. I didn’t write that song.

~Thom Yorke

I’ve watched this countless times over the years and it’s still one of the most powerful vocal performances I’ve ever seen. For the younger generations of people who probably see Radiohead as this overrated band that inexplicably always tops “best of” lists - this is why…and if it doesn’t leave you breathless, I don’t know what will.

Is it just me, or were women hotter in the 80s??

ethanfromestoboggan:

siamesedream:

100% just you…obviously there are exceptions, but as a whole just watch videos like “Hot for Teacher” and “Girls Girls Girls” and tell me you dont feel like you’re watching someone’s Aunt trying to look hot.

I raise you Tiffany and Sinead O’Connor.

Putting personal bias aside - you can’t say “women were hotter in the 80s” just because of 2 people, one being your biggest celebrity crush.

But I honestly don’t find either of them attractive, sorry. Sinead O Connor, when she was younger, had attractive features but the shaved head thing doesnt do it for me like it does for you…and Tiffany just looked like a typical poofy haired 80s teenager ala DJ Tanner.
